Since its inception, Johns Hopkins has grown to meet the needs of the surrounding East Baltimore community.

The five institutions on the East Baltimore campus have formed invaluable partnerships with the community to make a collaborative impact on the health status of the community, and continue to seek new and innovative strategies to improve the quality of life for our neighbors.

Today, over 20,000 people work on the property in more than 30 buildings spread across 79 acres.  The institution boasts not only a world-class hospital and medical school but also schools of nursing and public health that are leaders in their fields. While it draws patients and scholars from all over the globe, Johns Hopkins remains firmly committed to serving the health needs of the region.

For more than 100 years, our students, faculty and staff volunteer in community service programs in clinics, schools, jails, community centers and neighborhoods to combat health challenges in the area. The institution also is a solid partner in the city’s planned revitalization of East Baltimore, aiding local organizations’ efforts to lower crime, improve health and educational opportunities, and construct new businesses and residential living spaces.

In addition to providing much needed services for the community which surrounds the campus, Hopkins faculty students and staff have had the opportunity to participate in community services activities.
