About Our Work

Read about our work in Hopkins Medical News.

The cervix center at Hopkins coordinates all aspects of HPV disease. Our emphasis is on patient care, education and outreach. Because of exciting discoveries from our research, we are also in a position to offer the opportunity to participate in clinical trials. These trials will offer new vaccine therapies.

Cervical cancer is a sexually transmitted disease. It is caused by infection with human papillomavirus (HPV). Over 90 strains of HPV have been identified. Most cancers are caused by the high-risk types, which include 16, 18, 31 and 45. The most common cause of LSIL, HSIL and cancer is HPV16. The vaccine trials are targeted at HPV16.

The first study will determine the normal immune response to HSIL caused by HPV16. All participants will be screened for HPV type. We will draw blood to check your immune response. Your biopsy and cone resection will also be analyzed to measure your immune response. All participants will be paid. This study is very important, as it will provide the basis for evaluating the vaccine therapies.

Adjuvant Study
This study will also be open to patients with HSIL and will be open as soon as we have the fifteen patients for the first trial. All participants will be screened for HPV type. Those with HPV16 will be eligible for vaccine. We will draw participants' blood to check for their immune response to the vaccine. We will test their immune response also in the LEEP specimen. All participants will be paid.
