Welcome to the laboratory of Dr. Valina Dawson in the Institute of Cellular Engineering and the Departments of Neurology, Neuroscience, and Physiology and the Graduate Program in Cellular and Molecular Medicine at Johns Hopkins University.

Research in this laboratory is focused on discovering the molecular signaling events leading to neuronal cell death and the molecules that promote cell survival.  The ultimate goal of the laboratory is to identify new therapeutic targets that have potential to be developed into novel treatments for patients suffering from neurologic diseases.

The models we use to investigate these novel signal cascades are largely focused on neurodegenerative diseases, stroke, excitotoxicity, and ischemic preconditioning.  We also have projects on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and triple repeat disorders.  To investigate these mechanisms we apply a multidisciplinary approach using primary tissue culture, molecular cloning strategies, differential gene screening with array analysis, genetically engineered animals and protein biochemistry strategies.  My laboratory works interactively with Ted M. Dawson’s laboratory, which facilitates greater breadth in the scope of strategies we can employ to unravel the process of neurotoxicity and neurodegeneration.
