Education and Training Opportunities

Objectives
Our overall goal is to train investigators in the performance of high quality research to better answer fundamental and clinical questions regarding the use of CAM cancer interventions.

The Educational Program will be directed at two major target groups:

  1. health professionals in training (e.g., medical, nursing, public health students, postdoctoral fellows)
  2. existing health professionals (e.g., physicians, nurses, acupuncturists, dietitians)

Our efforts will build on existing programs where possible and create new programs tailored to the needs of each group. The acceptance and use of these specific educational programs will be evaluated as well as their impact on knowledge, professional practice, and patient and public use. The educational component is viewed as critical to the communication and effective translation of new knowledge, as well as the nurturing of a new generation of scientists in this area.

Leadership
David Levine, M.D. will coordinate the Education Program. In this role, Dr. Levine will help coordinate the development of educational programs. Dr. Levine has considerable experience in the education of health professionals, patients and the public.

He is currently Associate Chair of the Department of Medicine, Director of the Office of Postdoctoral Fellowship Program; and former Director of the Division of General Internal Medicine, and of the Department of Behavioral Science and Health Education. He has formal training in internal and preventive medicine, public health, behavioral sciences and health education. He has been the Principal Investigator and Director of an NIH Research Training grant directed at behavioral and preventive aspects of cardiovascular disease for the past 25 years, training more than 100 postdoctoral fellows and doctoral students.

Overall Training Environment
The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine has 422 active NIH-training grants, most of which can be used to support graduate work and/or postdoctoral training in a variety of clinical and scientific disciplines.
