The CAM center has been given access to space in two new cancer buildings: the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg building, which houses comprehensive clinical services, and the Bunting Cancer Research Building. The Center's physical focal point will be the Johns Hopkins Cancer Center. One of only 35 cancer centers in the country designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) as a comprehensive cancer center, Johns Hopkins has active programs in clinical research, lab research, education, community outreach, prevention and control. The oncology center is the only NCI comprehensive cancer center in the state of Maryland. However, the CAM Center will make use of facilities throughout the School of Medicine, because the nature of CAM research requires multiple collaborations and bridges traditional departmental lines in an academic medical institution.
The Johns Hopkins General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) will be available to financially support and expand CAM-related research. Under the direction of Christopher Saudek, M.D., the GCRC is composed of four units: an adult outpatient unit, an 18-bed inpatient unit, a pediatric unit and a neuro-behavioral research unit.
Johns Hopkins Singapore, under the direction of Paul Leitman, M.D., Ph.D., has a strong mandate for research. Johns Hopkins Singapore provides a unique opportunity to collaborate and foster dual research programs designed to answer questions evaluating alternative versus contemporary Western medicine. One of the initial projects will be done in collaboration with Alex Chang, M.D., in Singapore.
Clinical studies will be run through the Johns Hopkins Clinical Trials Unit, staffed by a physician director,Adrian Dobs, M.D., MHS; a financial manager, Libby Rector; and Tom Mitchell, who assists with regulatory documents.
