Your Stay in the Johns Hopkins Burn Center

At the Johns Hopkins Burn Center, your family member’s health and recovery are our primary concerns. We realize that this is a stressful time for you and want to provide as much support as possible.

Burn ICU

The Burn Intensive Care Unit (BICU) at the Burn Center is designed to provide advanced treatment for the burned patient. Burn Center patients need highly skilled medical attention, including close observation and the use of sophisticated monitoring equipment and comprehensive skin treatments.

Patients may be monitored 24 hours a day. In each room, there is a monitor that records the patient’s heart rate, blood pressure, respirations and pressure in the heart. These monitors can be observed from the nurses’ station and at the bedside. Other specialized equipment also may be used to care for the patient. A physician is readily available 24 hours a day.

Burn care requires a team approach. The team includes nurses, physicians, occupational and physical therapists, nutritionists, social workers and counselors.

Infection Control

  • In an effort to minimize the spread of infection, you may be asked to wear gloves and a gown to cover your clothes while visiting.
  • Please wash your hands with soap and water before leaving the patient’s room.
  • Please notify the nurse if you have a cold or other communicable disease before entering a patient’s room. You may be asked to wear a mask.

Family

  • Due to new federal privacy laws, giving out patient information by phone, other than condition, is prohibited.
  • Please choose one family spokesperson to make phone calls to the unit regarding patient condition. This will allow us to spend more time at the bedside caring for your loved one.
