Overview The Program on Ethics in Clinical Practice (POECP) aims to foster excellence in research, teaching, and practice of ethics in clinical practice at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. In order to accomplish this goal, the POECP is divided into three committees: - Teaching in Ethics in Clinical Practice
- Clinical Ethics Across Johns Hopkins Health System
- Research
Faculty involved with the POECP are drawn from the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics and represent a variety of academic disciplines, including clinical medicine, nursing, public health, social sciences, philosophy, and law. A description of the activities of each committee is below: Teaching in Ethics of Clinical Practice This committee focuses on improving the quality of education for medical students, nursing students, house staff, and other clinicians. Skills for moral problem solving within the healthcare setting need to be enhanced and emphasized. The primary goal of the committee is to develop a high-quality curriculum/training in ethics in clinical practice for diverse group of learners. A related goal of this committee is to enhance/supplement the ethics training of faculty who teach ethics. While faculty currently involved in ethics education activities at JHMI have some training in ethics and may be actively involved with academic bioethics literature or in direct problem solving through the Hospital Ethics Committee (HEC), many faculty will benefit by more extensive training in moral reasoning and ethical problem solving. Another goal is to develop a seminar series that will create a forum for the discussion of ethical challenges that clinicians face during the delivery of everyday care in the hospital. The seminar series will bring together physicians, nurses, social workers, and others involved in patient care to discuss these issues, each session focusing on a particular case or two to ground the discussion. Projects under consideration include: a) establishing a forum to foster expertise and ideas among HEC members, b) developing a training curriculum for current and potential members of the HEC that would focus on ethical theory, touch cases, models for deliberation and communications skills, and that might be developed into a CME/CMU course, and c) exploring the need for harmonization across the HECs in the Johns Hopkins system with regard to policies, practices, and training. The latter effort is a cross-committee effort aimed at evaluating the teaching/training curricula developed by the other two POECP committees. The committee serves as a hub for interdisciplinary research efforts among Institute faculty and other Hopkins faculty. It also facilitates meetings around specific research projects and provides key support for the development and implementation of empirical research.
