Carlton Haywood Jr., MA, is a 3rd year doctoral student in the Bioethics & Health Policy track. Carlton received his Masters degree in Bioethics from the University of Virginia, where his research focused on the ethical and policy issues surrounding the use of race as a variable in biomedical research. Carlton's current research interests are in African-American perspectives on bioethics and in the ethical and quality of care issues facing adults with sickle cell disease. In 2005 Carlton was awarded a National Research Service Award from the National Heart, Lung & Blood Institute to pursue his dissertation which is entitled “Factors Associated with the Adult Sickle Cell Disease Patient’s Willingness to Participate in Medical Research.”
