Biographical Sketch

Lawrence S. Wissow, M.D., is Professor in the Department of Health, Behavior, and Society, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He was a French major at Amherst College and spent a year at the Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris prior to going to medical school at Duke University. He originally trained as a pediatrician and was on the faculty at the School of Medicine for eight years. His primary role there was as the co-chair of the multi-disciplinary team assessing families where there was a concern for abuse and neglect. One product of that experience was a textbook on the medical evaluation of child abuse. He then trained as child psychiatrist and currently does his clinical work in two settings: a comprehensive pediatric HIV clinic and an outreach mental health clinic for recent Hispanic immigrants. Dr. Wissow is co-chair of one of the School of Public Health’s Institutional Review Boards. His research involves studying communication between patients and health care providers, with an emphasis on children and disclosure of mental health issues. Past projects include studying the use of values history advance directives in pediatric HIV care, and understanding the balance between family involvement and teen confidentiality in mental health care. His current work involves training pediatric primary care providers to use psychotherapeutic communication tools in the course of their routine care, and analyses of communication data to understand gender and ethnic disparities in primary care.
