Henry M. Seidel, M.D., is a general pediatrician, now retired. He has had a varied experience as a solo practitioner, a member of a group practice, the medical director of an HMO, and a participant on the many levels of the care of children in an academic institution. His career-long interests have been involved with the behavior of children, the ethical dimensions of the care of children, and the education of children, parents, and health professionals. To this end, he has been the sole or joint author on almost 50 papers. Dr. Seidel is senior author of two text books, one on pediatrics and the other is concerned with appropriate history taking and physical examinations. He has contributed chapters to other texts and has been widely consulted by a variety of institutions and foundations. In particular, he has worked with the American Academy of Pediatrics and was for many years the Chair of its Committee on Adoption and Dependent Care. He was instrumental in the development of at least a dozen major statements of the Academy in that regard. His present compelling interest is a course, Physician and Society, which is mandatory, unlike similar courses in other medical schools, for every student in the School of Medicine. It is required throughout the 4-year curriculum in an effort to bring front and center the issues that unite the medical profession and the community. As an original member of The Johns Hopkins Hospital Ethics Committee, he continues to be involved in the area of hospital ethics in a variety of ways. He is currently Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics. Dr. Seidel has also served as the Associate Dean for Student Affairs at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, the medical director of the Columbia Medical Plan, and the medical director of the Comprehensive Child Care Clinic at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. |
