Mary Catherine Beach, M.D., M.P.H., is Assistant Professor in the School of Medicine, with a joint appointment in the Bloomberg School of Public Health, at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Beach received her B.A. from Barnard College, her M.D. from The Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and her M.P.H. from Johns Hopkins. She has also completed the Greenwall Fellowship in Bioethics and Health Policy as well as a fellowship in the Division of General Internal Medicine. As a Post-Doctoral Fellow, Dr. Beach researched and wrote on the impact of do-not-resuscitate orders on physician decision-making, the relation between physician self-disclosure to patients and patient satisfaction, physicians’ conception of loyalty to patients and social justice, and on the question of whether there is public support for incorporation of cost-effectiveness data in physicians’ cancer screening recommendations. She has given presentations on these topics at national meetings. Dr. Beach has also done a summer internship in the office of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, where she worked on such issues as the patients’ rights, mental health parity, human subject protection, genetic discrimination, human cloning and stem cell research. Dr. Beach is the recipient of a Robert Wood Johnson Generalist Physician Faculty Scholar Award and a K-08 Award from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. She is currently conducting research on the related issues of respect for persons and respect for autonomy in clinical care, on patient-physician communication and on cultural competence. |
