Predictive Genetic Testing
As part of these services supported by the HDSA, the center provides
evaluation, counseling, and genetic testing to individuals at risk
for HD free of charge. Evaluation is done as part of the evaluation
clinic on Tuesday.
At the time of initial evaluation we will obtain a family history,
medical history and assess your psychiatric and neurological functioning.
If based on the evaluation you are determined to be at risk for
carrying the HD mutation you will be given the opportunity to enter
into genetic counseling.
The genetic and psychological counseling consists of two one-hour
sessions. It is required that these two appointments be completed
prior to being tested for the mutation. During these sessions you
will be asked to evaluate the potential implications that a positive
result for HD financial and personal well being. It is at this time
that you are encouraged to investigate insurance, employment and
future health care options. At the end of the second visit you will
have your blood drawn and it will be tested for the mutation.
Once you have had the blood drawn it will take approximately two
- three months for us to obtain your results. You will be asked
to return for a disclosure visit at which time one of the physicians
will notify you of your results and answer any questions you may
have at that time.
The genetic counselor will call the following day to address any
additional questions or concerns that you m ay have.
