Clinical Trials and Current Studies
Clinical trails are conducted of new and experimental therapeutics
for HD. Studies of medications are usually double blind and placebo
controlled. Studies are often conducted under the auspices of the
Huntington Study Group. Other therapeutic trials may be conducted
sponsored by pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies or the NIH.
We have conducted a number of trials run through our own center
including studies of vitamin E and anti-excitotoxic agent ideobeone.
Additionally, we participate in a number of observational studies
of HD. These studies include the longitudinal core study, the outreach
program, the PHAROS study, and the
PREDICT-HD study. The longitudinal core study follows controls and
gene-positive persons with Huntington's on a yearly basis and tracks
disease progression from
diagnosis through autopsy. The outreach program is available to
late stage HD patient residing in long- residing in long-term care
facilities who are medically unable to attend
clinic receive on-site neurological evaluations conducted by a specially
trained Hopkins research nurse. The PHAROS study follows individuals
who are at risk, but do not want
to know if they are gene positive or not yearly. The PREDICT HD
follows presymptomatic gene positive individuals yearly.
Other observational and treatment studies are planned which may
includepresymptomatic, at-risk, or expansion-positive individuals.
