Stephen Yang, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.C.C.P. Profile

Dr. Stephen Yang photoStephen C. Yang, M.D., is associate professor of surgery and oncology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and chief of thoracic surgery at both The Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.

He is an active member of numerous societies including the American College of Surgeons, American College of Surgeons Oncology Group, the American Society of Clinical Oncologists, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation, Association for Academic Surgeons, the Association for Surgical Education, the Society of University Surgeons, and the American Association of Thoracic Surgeons. 

He is editor of Practical Reviews in Chest Medicine, thoracic surgery section editor for The Annals of Surgical Oncology, and a guest editor and reviewer for numerous peer review journals. Dr. Yang co-edited Current Therapy in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, and edited the esophageal surgical section in the 2nd edition of Atlas of Gastrointestinal Surgery.  He is Editor-in-Chief of the book series The Early Diagnosis of Cancer, and editor of the section on The Early Diagnosis of Lung Cancer

His laboratory research interests include using molecular techniques for lung cancer screening and for molecular staging of micrometastasis to predict recurrence following surgical resection. His clinical practice and research covers general thoracic surgery in pulmonary and esophageal surgery, video-assisted and robotics thoracic surgery, mediastinal and pleural diseases, lung volume reduction surgery for emphysema, and work in the areas of patient safety and geriatric thoracic surgery. He recently received the 2008 Dean’s Professor Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Clinical Sciences for the School of Medicine.

Dr. Yang graduated from Duke University with a B.A. in chemistry and received his M.D. degree from the Medical College of Virginia. He completed his general surgery residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, and finished his cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at the Medical College of Virginia. He also completed a three-year thoracic surgical oncology research fellowship at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. In 1994, he joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins.
