An expert in foodborne and intestinal infections, Dr. Cynthia Sears is a professor of medicine and oncology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine as well as a professor of molecular microbiology and immunology at the Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Dr. Sears’ research focuses on “Alpha-bugs”—bacteria capable of causing cells in the colon to change their DNA and of manipulating other bacteria to develop colon cancer.  For nearly 20 years, her research has been conducted in both in the laboratory and clinical settings and has been funded continuously by the NIH.

The past president of the Anaerobe Society of the Americas, Dr. Sears has served as an associate editor for Clinical Infectious Diseases since 2000. She also is an active member of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), currently serving on the Board of Directors of IDSA as treasurer.

Dr. Sears received her medical degree from Thomas Jefferson Medical College followed by training in internal medicine at The New York Hospital in New York City. She trained in infectious diseases at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Institute and the University of Virginia. Dr. Sears joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1988.
