Lawrence Appel, M.D., M.P.H.

An authority on hypertension and cardiovascular disease, Dr. Appel is a professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins. He is a core faculty member of the Welch Center for Prevention, Epidemiology and Clinical Research. He holds a joint appointment in the departments of Epidemiology and International Health at the Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Appointed to the 2010 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, Dr. Appel is one of 13 nationally recognized experts named to the panel, which will advise the Secretary of Agriculture and the Secretary of Health and Human Services on revisions to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

Through research grants, he investigates the role of lifestyle and pharmacologic therapies as a means to prevent and treat hypertension, cardiovascular disease and kidney disease.  In the process, he has studied the roles of salt reduction, dietary modification, weight loss, and aggressive blood pressure control. 

He received his medical degree from NYU School of Medicine and his master’s of public health at Johns Hopkins.
