Karen L. Swartz, M.D.

An associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Dr. Swartz specializes in mood disorders with a focus on women’s health. She directs the clinical programs of the Mood Disorders Center at Johns Hopkins, and along with Dr. Jennifer Payne, she founded the Women’s Mood Disorders Center at Johns Hopkins. She also directs the Adolescent Depression Awareness Program, a school-based program to educate high school students, faculty and parents about teenage depression.

In addition to serving as associate director for residency education in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science, Dr. Swartz conducts research on psychiatric disorders in women and psychiatric disorders in the general population.

Dr. Swartz received her B.A. from Princeton University and her M.D. from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She also completed her residency at Johns Hopkins along with a postdoctoral fellowship in psychiatric epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
