Dr. Wittstein is an expert in stress cardiomyopathy, otherwise known as “broken heart syndrome,” where severe emotional or physical stress triggers an episode that resembles a heart attack but does not do any permanent damage. Since 2007, he has been elected to the Best Doctors in America Database.
A member of the American Heart Association, he has published and spoken extensively on the subject of stress-induced cardiomyopathy and is associate editor for Cardiovascular Psychiatry and Neurology. He has reviewed articles in his areas of expertise for The New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of the American Medical Association, the American Heart Journal and more.
His research has focused on the identification of risk factors that increase individual susceptibility to stress cardiomyopathy, and why the syndrome predominantly strikes older women.
Dr. Wittstein is an assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Cardiology at Johns Hopkins. He has been at Hopkins since he received his medical degree from its school of medicine in 1990.
