Suggestions for Lab Decontamination

(Areas of particular concern include computer keyboards and other control surfaces, areas of countertops that are not easily cleaned, supply and exhaust ducts, and dusty areas in the corners of floors and behind heavy equipment)

Room surfaces: (note air supply and exhaust ducts must be decontaminated).

a. Virucidal disinfectant (Virkon) followed by steam application (sign out from Animal Resources).

Or        b. Steam application followed by room decontamination using vaporized hydrogen peroxide under contract (e.g. Bioquellinc@aol.com)

Durable equipment:

            a. Cagewash, autoclave

or         b. Wash/scrub c detergent then soak in high level disinfectant such as Virkon, MB-10, 10% bleach, Cidex Pro (note: some disinfectants require respiratory protection - contact environmental health and safety for more information)

Equipment with electronics or porous surfaces, computers:

            a. Replace

or:        b. Tent decontamination with vaporized hydrogen peroxide or gaseous chlorine dioxide under contract (contact animal resources for more information)

or:        c. Clean up as best as possible (e.g. wipe down) then cover with impervious sanitizable surface (e.g. computer keyboard cover )
