A Selfless Gesture to Promote Teamwork

Doctors David and Marilyn (Mary) Zamierowski exemplify what it means to be selfless. Their generous donation of the Zamierowski Directorship for the Johns Hopkins Simulation Center is a reflection of their philosophy that teamwork is the venue that will promote excellence in healthcare. David and Mary began their relationship as a team when they met at The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in the fall of 1967 and married in the spring of the following year. They have devoted themselves to procuring advancements in medical care. Mary completed her postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Kansas, and David, a plastic surgeon, founded the Wound Care Centers of Kansas City. The Directorship was specifically created to assist and support Dr. Betsy Hunt, Director of the Johns Hopkins Medicine Simulation Center, in her unique efforts to expand the educational approach of simulation. After attending a symposium expressly for the opportunity to meet Betsy and hear her speak, David felt a symbiotic connection and was convinced of her qualifications as a source of “authenticity, validation, and information in the promotion of simulation.” He was impressed by her elegant and empiric approach to advocating the benefits of teaching and learning through simulation in a global capacity. Since his experience at Johns Hopkins as a medical student interacting with the Anesthesiology Department in the 1960s, and throughout his professional career, David has been impressed with the leadership position Anesthesia has taken in risk management and safety issues. He says, “It is my hope that Anesthesia will again take the lead, this time in using simulation to teach teamwork as the antidote to our current culture of individualism that is the greatest barrier to systems re-engineering for safety in healthcare.” The generosity of David and Mary is greatly appreciated and described by Anesthesiology Director Dr. John Ulatowski as an example of “their foresight and commitment to creating safer systems of care involving multidisciplinary teams.”
