Residency Program Leadership History

Meet Our Chiefs

The Chief Resident photographs line the hallway in the Blalock 14 hallway, serving as visual reminders of the depth of the resident talent in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine. Visitors, alumni and prospective residents navigating to the Director’s offices are visibly drawn to them – often commenting about who is now a leader in anesthesiology at some distant academic center. Since 1945, the Johns Hopkins Anesthesiology Residency Program has been producing tomorrow’s leaders in anesthesiology departments around the country, including the heads of anesthesiology at many major academic medical centers. These photos are reminders that a handful of very bright residents are put to the ultimate leadership test a bit earlier than the rest of their residency class. Known affectionately as “Chiefs” or Chief Residents, they spend a part of their last year in the program honing leadership skills – all while pursuing the same rigorous clinical and educational schedule completed by their peers.

Daily tasks within the department are varied and can include setting a complex year long schedule of “block rotations” that also meets the needs of a busy operating room schedule, advocating for resident issues, technology support, safety research projects, peer support, developing or evaluating educational materials or any number of other mission-critical tasks.

Being named a Chief Resident in the department comes with a certain badge of honor, respect for their power over the scheduling of academic rotational blocks, and the unspoken understanding from department clinical leadership that it is a very prestigious appointment that can shape any future career path.
