Our Mission
MissionThe Global Surgical Initiative is guided by the mission of improving the health of populations living in resource-constrained areas of the world through direct service, research, education and advocacy focused on the provision of surgical, obstetrical, and anesthesia services, for the purpose of supporting capacity and skills development in these disciplines.
History
Discussions leading to the establishment of the Global Surgical Initiative first began in the summer of 2009. Today, the Departments of Surgery, Anesthesiology & Critical Care Medicine, and Gynecology & Obstetrics at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, along with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and the School of Nursing are working together to create a collaborative center to coordinate global health initiatives that integrate surgical, obstetrical and anesthesia education and training, service, research and advocacy.
