Biography

Dr. Pham is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and Anesthesia Critical Care at the Johns Hopkins University, School of Medicine. He received his doctorate of medicine (MD) from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). Dr. Pham did his Emergency Medicine training at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. He did his fellowship in Anesthesia Critical Care at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Pham received his doctorate of philosophy (PhD) from the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health.

Dr. Pham is an international leader in research involving the quality and safety of healthcare. As a co-investigator on the national On The CUSP: STOP-BSI program, Dr. Pham led efforts that reduced thousands of infections and saved millions of healthcare dollars. Recent publications involve studying adverse events, medication errors, adverse event reporting systems, medical device safety, and healthcare-acquired infections. Dr. Pham has been funded to perform research by The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA), Canadian Patient Safety Institute (CPSI), National Library of Medicine (NLM), World Health Organization (WHO), and other private organizations. His research has been featured on the CBS “Early Show” as well as the New York Times.

Dr. Pham provides clinical care both in the Emergency Department and the Intensive Care Unit. This cross training in two clinical disciplines provides a unique perspective on the presentation and progression of patient illness. In addition to his clinical duties, Dr. Pham provides medical education to fellows, residents, and medical students.
