Principle research efforts are directed at understanding the factors contributing to ischemia:reperfusion injury of the lung, as well as the contribution of ischemia:reperfusion to the lung dysfunction seen in the early post-cardiopulmonary bypass period. To this end, I have developed a sensitive model of ischemia-reperfusion in a spontaneously breathing mouse. Utilizing various mouse strains, I am trying to determine whether there is a genetic predisposition to such injury as well as to determine the role of elastase and elastase inhibitors in this injury. We are also beginning to explore the influences mechanical ventilation-induced lung stretch on lung injury and kidney function utilizing various mouse models.
