Steven P. Cohen, M.D., Faculty
Dr. Steven P. Cohen obtained his medical degree at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, completed an anesthesiology residency at Columbia University, and a pain management fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital. Currently, he is Associate Professor of Anesthesiology & Critical Care Medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (military medical school) in Bethesda, MD. He is the Director of Medical Education for the Pain Management Division at Johns Hopkins, and Director of Chronic Pain Research at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

Dr. Cohen has been very active in teaching and pain research in recent years, having published more than 60 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters in the past 5 years. Among his major contributions are the development of a new FDA-approved technique for treating sacroiliac joint pain (lateral branch radiofrequency denervation), inventing the intravenous ketamine test to help determine treatment strategy in patients with neuropathic pain and fibromyalgia, conducting the first placebo-controlled study evaluating sacroiliac joint denervation, publishing the first articles describing the local administration of tumor necrosis factor inhibitors for pain treatment, and authoring the largest study ever published on intradiscal electrothermal therapy (IDET), a new treatment for low back pain. He currently serves on 3 journal editorial boards and regularly reviews for a dozen others.

In addition to his academic work in pain management, Dr. Cohen is a Colonel in the Army Reserve, and serves as Chief, Anesthesia & Operative Services at the 48h Combat Support Hospital in Maryland. He has published extensively on military medical issues, including articles in USA Today, Korea Times, Stars & Stripes, Baltimore Sun and New England Journal of Medicine. He has been deployed twice in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. As an army reservist who sees patients and conducts research for the Dept. of Defense, Dr. Cohen has treated U.S. Senators, Cabinet Members, Foreign Dignitaries and Heads of State.
