Configuring and Using Remote Desktop

With Remote Desktop on Windows XP Professional or Windows Vista, you can access your computer when you are at another computer. This means, for example, that you can connect to your work computer from home and have access to all of your applications, files, and network resources as though you were in front of your computer at work.

When you connect to your computer at work, Remote Desktop automatically locks that computer so no one else can access your applications and files while you are gone. When you come back to your computer at work, you can unlock it by typing CTRL+ALT+DEL.

We highly suggest that you have a high-speed broadband connection such as DSL or cable for greater efficiency. A dial-up connection sometimes can be too slow.

Do the following at your Hopkins based computer to configure it for VPN (Virtual Private Network) and Remote Access:

  1. Log on to the "My Johns Hopkins" portal at: https://my.johnshopkins.edu.
  2. You will need your Jhed (Johns Hopkins Enterprise Directory) ID and password to login.
  3. Click the second tab: "My Jhed."
  4. On the right side of the page click "Download VPN Client Software" to download and install the "JHSecure VPN Client" onto your machine. Click the "Help" link if you need assistance. You will be asked to reboot after the software installs.

Do the following from home to start a Remote Desktop Connection with your computer at Hopkins

  1. Establish a VPN connection: Start, Programs, JHSecure VPN Client, Connect to JHSecure.
  2. Start, Programs, Accessories, Communications, Remote Desktop Connection
  3. Enter the Computer Name that you want to connect to. This is the Computer Name that you noted in the previous section.
  4. You will then be prompted to enter your ACCM logon credentials (Jhed ID and password) as if you were here.
  5. Your display will appear as if you were working at your Hopkins computer.
  6. When you are finished with your remote connection, click Start, Logoff in order to terminate the connection.
