Configuring and Using Remote Desktop with JHConnect

With Remote Desktop on Windows XP Professional or Windows Vista, you can access your computer when you are at another computer. This means, for example, that you can connect to your work computer from home and have access to all of your applications, files, and network resources as though you were in front of your computer at work.

When you connect to your computer at work, Remote Desktop automatically locks that computer so no one else can access your applications and files while you are gone. When you come back to your computer at work, you can unlock it by typing CTRL+ALT+DEL.

We highly suggest that you have a high-speed broadband connection such as DSL or cable for greater efficiency. A dial-up connection sometimes can be too slow.

Do the following at your Hopkins based computer to configure it for Remote access:

  1. Right click “My Computer”.
  2. Select Properties from the drop down menu.
  3. Click the Remote tab.
  4. Place a check mark in the box – “Allow users to connect remotely to this computer”.
  5. Note your Computer Name – It is displayed below “Full computer name:”.
  6. Click OK.
