Residency Educational Objectives
KNOWLEDGE
During the rotation the residents should become familiar with the following topics as they apply to ICU patients:
- General ICU topics: nutritional support, upper GI bleeding, venous thromboembolism, coagulation disorders, acid-base balance, neuromuscular blockade, analgesia, sedation, pharmacokinetics, transport of the critically ill, CPR, ethical issues in continuing, witholding or withdrawing care.
- Respiratory system: airway management in the critically ill, chronic airway management, management of mechanical ventilation, weaning from mechanical ventilation, management of chest tubes.
- Cardiovascular system: diagnosis and treatment of dysrhythmias, ischemia, valvular heart disease, support of the failing circulation.
- Renal system: renal failure, renal replacement therapy
- Infectious disease: antibiotic therapy and prophylaxis, infectious pathogens, sepsis, management of the immunocompromised patient.
- Special topics: toxicology and drug overdose, solid organ transplant, trauma management, burn management, critical care obstetrics, metabolic and endocrine abnormalities.
SKILLS
- Airway management and intubation in ICU setting
- Placing and changing invasive monitors
- Diagnostic procedures (e.g.: lumbar puncture, paracentesis)
- Interpretation of radiologic studies
PERFORMANCE
- Ability to formulate and implement a diagnostic and management plan for complex, critically ill patients. This is assessed during presentations at rounds and at the bedside throughout the day.
