Ambulatory Anesthesia:
Resident Educational Objectives

Knowledge

  • Become familiar with discharge criteria and plan anesthesia to be compatible with rapid recovery and discharge.
  • Learn appropriate PACU maneuvers to facilitate discharge.
  • Recognize the patient that warrants admission or consult.

Skills

  • Learn the use of the laryngeal mask airway.
  • Learn when and how to use the caudal block, penile block, and local infiltration to minimize anesthesia needs and promote comfort and rapid recovery of the pediatric patient.
  • Recognize patients and procedures that are appropriate for ambulatory surgery.

Performance

  • Become proficient in the quick preoperative evaluation including NPO status, the risks and plan for anesthesia, and how to handle missing information efficiently and safely.
  • Learn to evaluate cases quickly for the appropriateness of procedure selection, patient selection including the high risk patient, and anesthesia selection in the outpatient setting.
  • Become familiar with the use of short acting drugs and anesthetics (especially propofol, mivacurium, and desflurane), and how to provide cost effective anesthesia.
  • Become highly organized at the start of the day for rapid turnover of all scheduled cases.
  • Become familiar with the appropriate use of local, regional, and intravenous anesthesia in the outpatient setting.
  • Become familiar with the Pediatric cases that are appropriate for outpatient surgery and plan anesthesia that is compatible with safe, rapid recovery while minimizing side effects and trauma for the pediatric patient.
  • Become familiar with premedication drugs and dosages and the use of inhalational induction for the pediatric patient.
