
Richard J. Traystman
Richard J. Traystman, Ph.D., was a distinguished professor and director of the research laboratories for the Department of Anesthesiology/Critical Care Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He was senior vice chairman for research in the department. Dr. Traystman also served on the faculty of the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health.
Dr. Traystman received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Long Island University and his Ph.D. in cardiopulmonary resuscitation from Johns Hopkins University. He joined the faculty at Hopkins soon after receiving his doctorate. He very quickly became an active member of the committees that shape the academic standards for his areas of interest, and those that select graduate students. Dr. Traystman has trained six doctoral students and 83 fellows. He continues to serve on several senior committees.
Dr. Traystman's research interest is in the regulation of the brain's vasculature in normal and pathophysiological situations. He has made important contributions to our understanding of the mechanisms of injury from stroke and mechanisms of neuroprotection.
He has served extensively on numerous investigational research committees for the American Heart Association since 1983. He currently serves on several AHA committees as a member of their executive group. Dr. Traystman additionally serves on committees for 11 other professional organizations and institutes, including the National Institutes of Health; its National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute; and its National Institute of Neurological Communicative Disorders and Stroke. He also serves on committees for the American Society of Anesthesiology, the Society for Critical Care Medicine and the American Physiological Society.
Dr. Traystman is a reviewer for 20 journals in the fields of anesthesiology, critical care, physiology, neurology, stroke and blood flow. He also is on the editorial board of three journals: the American Journal of Physiology: Heart and Circulatory Physiology; Stroke; and the Journal of Cerebral Blood Flow and Metabolism.
Dr. Traystman has authored 389 articles in medical journals; supplied editorial commentary 18 times in the journal Stroke; written 92 chapters in medical textbooks; and produced 560 abstracts.
His many awards reach back to the earliest days of his medical training. Two recent honors include the American Society for Anesthesiology Excellence in Research Award (1997) and the Stuart C. Cullen Medal and Distinguished Professorship Award from the University of California, San Francisco (1998).
