Dr. Peter Pronovost Delivers
ASA 2009 Rovenstine Lecture

Patient safety expert Dr. Peter Pronovost delivered a dramatic call to arms to his fellow anesthesiologists during his delivery of the prestigious Rovenstine lecture gathered at the 2009 Annual Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA).  The lecture is an annual event reserved for prominent leaders in our field, and Pronovost facilely delivered a 48th jewel to the audience.  As ACCM’s Director Dr. John Ulatowski commented, “Peter demonstrated on the national stage his and your accomplishments to change the face of anesthesiology today and create new missions for the future.  His leadership at the national and international level shows we can make a difference in population health and our effect goes beyond singular treatments in individual ORs, ICU and pain treatment rooms inside of ACCM and JHH.  He challenged all in attendance to join in a larger venue of health care delivery than tradition would define for anesthesiologists.

About the Annual ASA Meeting

For over a century, the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) has been a cornerstone for the medical practice of anesthesiology and a leader in improving patient care. The Society's achievements have made it an important voice in American medicine and the foremost advocate for patients who require anesthesia or relief from pain.

The ASA Annual Meeting took place this year in New Orleans, Louisiana, October 17th-21st and featured hundreds of sessions, scientific abstracts and exhibits. On October 19th, Johns Hopkins Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine's own Dr. Peter Pronovost delivered the annual Rovenstein Lecture. This prestigious lecture honors great leaders in Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine.

Also, in accordance with ASA’s Strategic Plan objective to “Promote the health and welfare of ASA members,” ASA offered a Wellness Screening Program at the 2009 Annual Meeting. The program is a pilot project initiated by the Committee on Occupational Health. Screenings were administered by Wellness, Inc., a national corporation that has offered these services for 22 years. The program has an established track record and has been well received at other national medical associations’ annual meetings.
