Wilmer Eye Institute's New Home

The historic Wilmer dome is reflected in the new building's windows.

The Wilmer Eye Institute begins a whole new era with the opening of the new $105 million Robert H. and Clarice Smith Building.  Home to six of the most modern ophthalmic operating rooms in the world, Wilmer’s new home is now capable of performing  50 percent more procedures each day. With five floors dedicated to research, Wilmer has also more than doubled the space for what is already the largest eye-related research program in the country.

The new building is located at Broadway and Orleans Street and opened for patients on August 13. The research entrance is angled precisely toward the historic Wilmer dome, reflecting the 1889 structure in the facility’s modern windows.

The Robert H. and Clarice Smith building’s dedication, set to coincide with the 80th anniversary of Wilmer’s first dedication, will take place on Oct. 16th. This marks the completion of the first stage of Hopkins’ medical campus expansion project, scheduled for completion in 2011.
