Residency Programs

The Department is offering approximately 25 positions for clinical anesthesia training, to take place between July 2009 and June 2012, in the 2008 Match.

Up to eight of the positions are Categorical positions in conjunction with the Mercy Medical Center / University of Maryland (program #1242040C0) or the Johns Hopkins University/Sinai Hospital (program #1242040C1) Preliminary Year Programs in Internal Medicine.  Categorical residents will spend a preliminary year (July 2008 - June 2009) at Mercy Medical Center or Sinai Hospital and the subsequent three years of clinical anesthesia training (July 2009 - June 2012) at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and affiliated sites.

Up to 25 of the positions are Advanced positions (program #1242040A0) consisting of only three years of clinical anesthesia training (July 2009 - June 2012).  The actual division between Categorical and Advanced positions will be determined by applicant preference in the Match.

Preliminary Year Programs

As the Department offers a maximum of eight Categorical positions, most residents receiving clinical anesthesia training at The Johns Hopkins Hospital must obtain preliminary-year training at other programs.  Baltimore is home to a number of excellent programs in internal medicine:

and surgery:

Applicants must submit separate applications via ERAS and independently arrange for interviews at each program under consideration. The Department will be happy to help coordinate interview dates so as to minimize travel to and from Baltimore. Coordinated interviews may require more than a single-day’s stay in Baltimore.

Application Information

The Department encourages applications for PGY-2 positions, beginning in July 2009, from graduates (as of June 2008) of allopathic and osteopathic medical schools who demonstrate exceptional potential for leadership in all aspects of the field of Anesthesiology.  All applications must be submitted via ERAS.  The application must include:

  1. Certified medical school transcript
  2. Dean’s letter / Medical School Performance Evaluation
  3. Transcript from the USLME Step 1 (or its predecessors) or the COMLEX Level 1 examination
  4. Personal statement
  5. At least three letters of recommendation from those who know the applicant well and can comment on the following points:
    1. cognitive abilities
    2. judgmental skills
    3. interpersonal skills (with patients and with colleagues)
    4. ethical qualities
    5. work ethic

Additional Application Information for International Medical Graduates

The Department considers the applications of international medical graduates who demonstrate the same high potential shown by its domestic applicants. Graduates of non-LCME accredited schools must submit additional materials through ERAS. These include:

  1. ECFMG status report.
  2. Clinical Fellowship Applicant Information Form for Graduates of Non-LCME Accredited Schools.
  3. Request for Reciprocity Review.

Each of the latter two forms should be completed according to instructions at the top of the form and submitted via ERAS as if it were a letter of recommendation. Graduates of some international medical schools may not need to submit items 2 and 3. Please contact Lynda Miller (lmillera@jhmi.edu, 1-800-926-6796) for further details.

For many international medical graduates, the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine will require evidence of outstanding clinical skills before granting recognition of medical degrees. Requisite evidence must come from at least 6 months of U.S. clinical experience at the PGY-1 level, or above, completed by December 2007. Please contact Lynda Miller (lmillera@jhmi.edu, 1-800-926-6796) for further details.

The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine does not sponsor H-1B visas for graduates of international medical schools. (It may sponsor such visas for non-citizen graduates of U.S. medical schools.) Applicants must arrange for J-1 visa sponsorship via the ECFMG.

Interviews and Deadlines

A full day of interviews and related activities allows the applicant to gain an in-depth look at the Department and vice versa.  Interviews are mandatory; invitations will be initiated by the Department after the release of Dean’s Letters on November 1, 2007.  All required application materials must be received before the interview date.  Unfortunately, not all candidates can be granted interviews.

Interviews will be scheduled on throughout November, December and January.  Although there is no deadline for the receipt of applications, interviews will only be granted according to availability.  Prompt submission of an application and response to an interview invitation will ensure the best selection of interview dates.

Selection Process

The Department searches for applicants with strong motivation for a career in anesthesiology, a broad base of medical knowledge, sound judgment, maturity, high ethical standards, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, compassion, a strong work ethic, intellectual curiosity and evidence of scholarship. These intangibles form the criteria for selection among many highly qualified candidates.
