Residency Program in Anesthesiology
The Department offers approximately 25 positions for clinical anesthesia training each year. Although we do not have an integrated internship, we do offer up to 8 categorical positions in conjunction with Mercy Medical Center/University of Maryland (program 1242040C0) and Johns Hopkins University/Sinai Hospital (program 1242040C1), both preliminary year programs in internal medicine. Candidates who match to one of these programs will spend their first year at Mercy or Sinai and their subsequent 3 years at the Johns Hopkins Hospital Department of Anesthesiology. We also offer advanced positions (program 124040A0) in the match for candidates wishing to pursue internships at programs separate from the Johns Hopkins system. Candidates matching through the advanced positions will matriculate at Johns Hopkins following the clinical base year (internship) of their choosing.
Clinical Base Year Programs
Clinical base year options in the Baltimore area include the following excellent programs:
- Johns Hopkins Hospital
- Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center
- Mercy Medical Center/University of Maryland
- Sinai Hospital
- Union Memorial Hospital
- University of Maryland
Applicants must submit separate application via ERAS and independently arrange for interviews at each program under consideration for the clinical base year outside of the two categorical programs. Unlike the independent clinical base year options, the appointments for the categorical programs can be facilitated by our office. Our office will be happy to help coordinate interview dates so as to minimize travel to and from Baltimore. Coordinated interviews may require more than a single-day’s stay in Baltimore.
Application Information
The Department encourages applications for PGY-2 positions, beginning in September of the application year, as soon as ERAS opens. We encourage applications from candidates of allopathic and osteopathic medical schools who demonstrate exceptional academic and leadership potential in the field of anesthesiology. All applications must be submitted through ERAS. We encourage early application. We begin reviewing applications in September and begin to offer interview spots in early October. The application must include:
- Certified medical school transcript
- Dean’s letter/Medical School Performance Evaluation (as soon as available – this must be received before the date of your interview)
- USMLE and/or COMLEX transcript
- Personal statement
- At least 3 letters of recommendation from those who know the applicant well and at least 1 that reflects performance on an anesthesiology rotation. The letters should comment on the following attributes:
- Cognitive abilities
- Judgment skills
- Interpersonal and communication skills
- Professionalism, work ethic, integrity
- Ability to work in the operating room environment, to multi-task and to think on your feet.
Additional Application Information
for International Medical Graduates
The Department considers the applications of international medical graduates who demonstrate the same high potential shown by its domestic applicants. Graduates of non-LCME accredited schools must submit additional materials through ERAS. These include:
- ECFMG status report.
- Clinical Fellowship Applicant Information Form for Graduates of Non-LCME Accredited Schools.
- Request for Reciprocity Review.
Each of the latter two forms should be completed according to instructions at the top of the form and submitted via ERAS as if it were a letter of recommendation. Graduates of some international medical schools may not need to submit items 2 and 3. Please contact Andrea R. Albert (aalbert4@jhmi.edu, 410-955-7609) for further details.
For many international medical graduates, the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine will require evidence of outstanding clinical skills before granting recognition of medical degrees. Requisite evidence must come from at least 6 months of U.S. clinical experience at the PGY-1 level, or above, completed by December 2010. Please contact Andrea R. Albert (aalbert4@jhmi.edu, 410-955-7609) for further details.
Interviews and Deadlines
Pre-interview activities start the night before with a dinner for the applicants. Resident volunteers sign up to share their knowledge of the Department with the applicants. The interview day begins at 7:30 am and finishes around 1:00 pm after having lunch that is attended by residents. Interested applicants can then go to visit Mercy or Sinai. Others can arrange special meetings with faculty that share similar research interests.
Interviews are mandatory for anyone wishing to train at Johns Hopkins. Invitations are issued after all application documents are received in ERAS. We urge early completion of documents because we cannot offer every qualified candidate an interview; getting materials in early may offer an advantage. We do have a wait list for those not picked as first round interview candidates. Interviews are offered in November, December and January.
Selection Process
The Department searches for applicants who have diverse life experiences coupled with scholarly abilities. Highly motivated individuals with a strong work ethic, maturity, excellent interpersonal skills, high ethical standards, sound judgment and the desire and ability to be leaders in the field of anesthesiology are sought. These intangibles form the criteria for selection among many highly qualified candidates.
