Information for Outside Medical Student Rotators

We welcome all medical students from accredited North American (USA and Canada) medical schools to spend a four to eight week clinical rotation at the Johns Hopkins Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care Medicine. Unfortunately, due to credentialing difficulties we cannot accept medical students from outside the USA and Canada (except Guy's and St. Thomas Medical Schools in London, Erasmus University in Rotterdam, Netherlands and Trinity and National University of Singapore) for either clinical or research electives.

We accept one student per month from outside medical schools. We DO NOT take ANY students for the month of July as this tends to be our busiest month as we get our new residents assimilated into the Hopkins system. The most popular months to rotate are from August to October as these months tend to fill with students who are interested in applying to our residency program.

Clinical Elective

In order to rotate at the Johns Hopkins Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care Medicine you must first apply and then be accepted. We are interested in students who are seriously considering a career in anesthesia and critical care medicine and are interested in applying to our residency program.

In order to apply you must complete all of the following:

1. Contact the Registrar’s Office and complete the application. The registration fee is $250 of which the Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care Medicine will pay $125. You will be responsible for the remaining $125. The Registrar’s Office has additional information on this process and their requirements at
http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/som/Audience/visitors.html

Please contact Emma Sullens for the application.

We will process your application as soon as we receive all the above. We will then notify you of our decision. We use a rolling admissions type system.

Research Elective

For those students interested in doing a research elective you must contact a faculty member yourself. The details and specifics of your rotation will be worked out between you and the faculty member. If you wish to receive credit for a research month, you will have to register at the Registrar’s Office and comply with all HIPAA requirements in addition to finding a Hopkins research mentor. Basically, you will have to meet all the same requirements as the clinical elective. If you have further questions please contact Andy Collins or Dr. Brad Winters. Most of these positions are unpaid.

For those who wish to do a research elective but not receive credit you do NOT need to contact the Residency Office or submit an application to the Registrars office. Simply find a mentor and work out the details. Remember, the Residency Office does not assign research mentors.

Thank you very much for your interest in our department. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
