Mission

To advance research and education in the economic evaluation, quality of life, and patient satisfaction related to perioperative pharmacologic agents, resource utilization, and operating room management.

Fellowship Proposal

The purpose of this fellowship is:

  1. To provide the trainee with a basic understanding of medical care financing.
  2. To understand and critique manuscripts related to perioperative economics and outcomes research.
  3. To undertake a basic project related to perioperative health service research.

Basic Curriculum

Clinical Associate 3 year

  1. The clinical curriculum is independent of the current fellowship and is solely based on requirements of the residency office.
  2. The resident will enroll in the Business in Medicine or school of public health (with a concentration in health policy and management) courses and obtain the certificate degree if the Business course is taken. Alternatively, the goal is to complete an MHS degree in the CA-4 year or as a junior faculty.
  3. The trainee will participate in a monthly tutorial organized by Dr. Fleisher with rotating leaders among the faculty. The resident will be responsible for at least one presentation every other month from the literature.
  4. Attendance at seminars for health policy and management and the Program for Medical Technologies and Practice Assessment.

CA-4 year

  1. Continuation of course work toward a Masters Degree
  2. Based upon research conducted during Clinical Associate 3 year, design and implement a project which involves perturbing part of the hospital operation and determine its economic and/or medical outcome impact.
  3. Involvement in appropriate departmental or hospital committees or working groups related to area of interest.

Structure of Tutorial

The tutorials will evolve all trainees enrolled in the fellowship. Selected topics will be chosen. Initially, the seminar will focus on understanding and reading the medical literature. The second half will focus on reviewing selected topics and manuscripts, for which the resident will review the actual manuscript and critique it. If possible, the resident will be encouraged to attend Dr. Fleisher's course on Medical Technology Assessment as an audit student during the spring.

Research Agenda

All trainees will be encouraged to select one faculty member as their research mentor. Together with this mentor, they will design either a clinical trial, economic analysis, or construct a model related to perioperative care. Initially, they will produce a white paper describing the importance of the question or problem to be addressed and review the available literature. This paper should be completed by October 1st. A research project will be designed and appropriate approval obtained to begin data collection on October 1st. The project will be reviewed by all members of the faculty and input sought early during the fellowship training. They will be encouraged to use all members of the faculty to develop their project.
