Pediatric Fellowship Overview
The Fellowships in Pediatric Anesthesia and Pediatric Critical Care Medicine are ACGME accredited.Pediatric Anesthesiology has developed into a separate subspecialty in anesthesiology in order to deal with the distinct physiological, pharmacological, and psychological needs of infants and children. In addition, the technical skills required for safe delivery of anesthesia in the smallest of infants are more readily achieved by individuals dedicated solely to pediatric anesthesia. The Pediatric Anesthesia Division consists of twenty three pediatric anesthesiologists/intensivists. Our group reflects a broad range of experience, and 18 members of the group are trained in both pediatrics and anesthesiology.
Clinical responsibilities for the Pediatric Anesthesiology Division include the provision of anesthesia services for children in the operating room and in such other locations as MRI, interventional radiology, radiation oncology, cardiac catheterization laboratory, and endoscopy suites. The Division supports 9000 cases per year (30% less than two years of age) with a significant number of cardiac, neurologic, orthopedic, otolaryngologic, urologic and general surgical procedures. Over two hundred neonates are anesthetized each year, many of whom are neonatal surgical emergencies. The Johns Hopkins Hospital is a regional pediatric trauma center and pediatric burn center, providing experience in acute care in the operating room and postoperative management in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
