Overview
The division of ambulatory anesthesiology
provides state of the art perioperative care for patients having
outpatient surgery at the Johns Hopkins Outpatient Center. Over
5000 adult and pediatric patients, having a wide range of surgical
procedures, are cared for each year. Three attending anesthesiologists
and a rotating anesthesiologist from the division of pediatric
anesthesiology staff the six operating rooms. Resident anesthesiologists
and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists also staff the operating rooms on a daily basis.
Clinical research interests of the full time staff include the
management of pain in the outpatient surgical setting, the evaluation
of new anesthetic drugs and agents for outpatient surgery, and
the development of anesthetic techniques that facilitate ambulatory
surgery. Opportunities for research are available in these areas
for fellows who wish to spend a specialized year in ambulatory
anesthesia. Opportunities are also available for fellows to
participate in the executive graduate certificate program in
the Business of Medicine. The goal of the fellowship is to provide
the skills necessary for the physician to administratively and
clinically manage an outpatient surgery center.
