Pediatric Anesthesia Fellowship

The fellowship program is designed to prepare the individual for an academic career in pediatric anesthesiology. Although the design of the fellowship can be tailored to individual needs (one or two years duration, depending upon exposure to research), the recommended course encompasses a one-year experience. The first year consists of clinical experience in the pediatric operating rooms, plus the PICU and NICU and the acute pain service; the fellow supervises and teaches residents under the direction of a staff member. Appropriate time will be set aside during the fellowship to develop experience in the research lab. We believe this combination of clinical, teaching, and research activities provide the best preparation for an academic career in pediatric anesthesiology.

Regional anesthesia is routinely used for many pediatric procedures. The Division operates a very successful acute pain service and has been influential in reducing pain and suffering for all children in the Johns Hopkins Hospital. One faculty member has acupuncture expertise and another is involved in chronic pain management in pediatric patients. There is close collaboration between the Pediatric Anesthesiology Division and many dual-trained pediatric-anesthesiology faculty also serve as PICU attendings. Research projects and conferences are conducted jointly in many cases, but there is a lecture program specifically for the pediatric anesthesiology fellows.
