I am honored to have the responsibility of facilitating resident education in a Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine with such a strong tradition of excellence in clinical care, education and research. I am proud to be a part of the training of some of the brightest and most talented new members of the specialty of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine. Our residents come to us from a variety of different backgrounds: most directly from medical school; some with Boards in other specialties; some with a Ph.D. and still others have entered medicine after having a very successful nonmedical career. However, to the person, I have found that the common thread that links each of the residents together is a desire to provide outstanding patient care in a friendly environment which fosters learning.
The mission of the residency program in Anesthesiology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital is to train outstanding clinical Anesthesiologists and the leaders in clinical and academic Anesthesiology. This is done in a collegial environment, where there is an appropriate balance of education and service, and where opportunities are provided to the residents to maximize their clinical and academic potential. The residents benefit from the tremendous variety of clinical exposure, and from a faculty that provides an appropriate emphasis on education, direction and autonomy.
