Welcome! You’ve landed at the website of The Johns Hopkins Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine Residency Program, considered by many experts to be the premier anesthesiology training program in the world. Under this historic and famous Dome, generations of anesthesiologists have trained to serve around the globe. Some residents have made this a permanent home, staying on for successful careers in academics, research and clinical care – others fanning out to private practice and an impressive number to healthcare clinical leadership positions at other academic centers. As the three newly appointed Chief Residents, we will have special and lifelong memories of our time in leadership training, and an important opportunity to serve as informational resources to those who may be hoping to follow in our footsteps by applying for the Johns Hopkins Medicine Anesthesiology Residency Program. To those of you who have come to this site to learn about anesthesiology residency programs In hopes of joining us here, please let us share a bit of our special story with you… and by all means, contact us if you want to know anything more about the program.
Hopkins has a strong tradition in training leaders and experts in all subspecialties of anesthesiology. A list of Hopkins alumni is a veritable who’s who of anesthesiology chairpeople, program directors, and leaders in basic science and translational research. The faculty members in our department are dedicated to clinical and didactic training, and the result is outstanding perioperative physicians who are prepared to do a fellowship, research, or to enter private practice.
Our didactic curriculum consists of a small-group morning case presentations, articles-of-the-week review, and “core topic” curricula that cover a basic anesthesiology textbook. These daily meetings are offered for the pre-call and post-call teams. Each week, one of our dedicated faculty members leads a conference with an oral-board, question-and-answer format. Additionally, we have a more traditional weekly resident lecture and Grand Rounds. Grand Rounds are often given by visiting professors, all prominent in their field. There are numerous rotation-specific lectures and an extensive online curriculum. A generous book fund and Miller's Anesthesia augment the didactic program for each resident.
Though our program is quite large, applicants often comment on the warm, inviting atmosphere here at Hopkins. There is a strong feeling of camaraderie not only among the residents, but also between residents and faculty. We are often urged to call our faculty members by their first name, and faculty members frequent our social gatherings.
Though we work hard in while in the hospital, we enjoy each other’s company frequently outside the hospital as well. The department administration at Hopkins believes in training excellent physicians who are also well-rounded human beings. To that end, we start the year off with our Annual Crab Feast to welcome new residents and to celebrate the start of another academic year. The Winter Holiday Party is a popular event every year when the entire department comes together for a relaxed evening of fine dining and dancing. Each May, we bid farewell to the graduating residents with an awards dinner. The department also hosts a monthly “end of block” party that is traditionally held at a local bar. This is a resident favorite, and it’s a great way to get to know your co-residents and attendings outside the operating room. Other social activities such as Maryland wine tours and parties at residents’ homes speckle the calendar. We also offer financial planning and practice management seminars that are provided at no cost to the residents.
Baltimore, nicknamed 'Charm City' for its friendly people and atmosphere, is a vibrant East Coast city. There are wonderful neighborhoods centrally located within the city, as well as conveniently located suburbs and rural areas. The cost of living in Baltimore is generally lower in comparison to other East Coast cities. Many of our residents are homeowners on a single-resident salary. Those who enjoy sports will appreciate Oriole Park at Camden Yards or tailgating before a Ravens game. Those who spend even a short time in Canton, Little Italy, Fell's Point or the Inner Harbor will feel the charm of historic Baltimore combined with an energetic restoration. In addition, Baltimore is close to many other major metropolitan areas including Washington DC, Philadelphia, and New York City. All are easily accessible for day trips. The weather here in the mid-Atlantic is comfortable with fairly mild winters and warm, sunny summers.
Here at Hopkins, we work in a collegial, supportive learning environment. Residents who graduate from our program are superbly trained anesthesiologists who are eminently prepared for the changing demands of our growing and important specialty.
Sincerely,
