Introduction To The Johns Hopkins Program

Until recently, patients who chose to avoid blood products for religious or other reasons had limited options. In only a few years, the technology and the dialogue have come together at a number of institutions around the country and the world that have initiated a new era in medicine. The Johns Hopkins University is proud to undertake a leadership role in the development of this technology, extensive research studies, clinical trials and the delivery of services to patients in a wide variety of specialties.

SERVICES AND PROCEDURES AVAILABLE AT JOHNS HOPKINS INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:

  • PREOPERATIVE EVALUATION by a multidisciplinary group of internists, surgeons and anesthesiologists, which permits recognition of anemia or underlying hemostatic or cardiovascular compromise
  • COORDINATION OF PATIENT CARE, permitting formulation of treatment plans for patients and communication with all specialties including pediatrics, surgery, oncology and internal medicine
  • SYNTHETIC ERYTHROPOIETIN and INTRAVENOUS IRON, which stimulate the bone marrow to produce more red blood cells
  • MINIMALLY INVASIVE SURGICAL TECHNIQUES, including the gamma knife and laparoscopic procedures
  • METICULOUS SURGICAL TECHNIQUES including the electrosurgical and laser beam coagulators, resulting in minimal blood loss
  • THE CELL SAVER, allowing blood shed during a patient's operation to be washed and recirculated to the patient
  • NORMOVOLEMIC HEMODILUTION, using volume expanders to permit the immediate preoperative removal of whole blood that is reinfused when bleeding occurs during the operation
  • HEMOSTATIC AGENTS, to reduce intraoperative blood loss by enhancing coagulation
  • POSTOPERATIVE BLOOD SALVAGE, allowing recirculation of blood shed after operation
  • HEMOCONCENTRATION, following cardiac bypass that prevents the occurrence of postoperative anemia in cardiac surgery
