Meet ACCM's Marshall Scholar
Kurt Kurt Herzer (left) with renowned patient safety expert Dr. Peter Pronovost, and a patient at the Johns Hopkins Hospital.New Marshall Scholar, Kurt Herzer, will be heading to the United Kingdom in 2009 to pursue his research interest in improving global public health. Kurt has been working in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine for several years on a number of Perioperative Safety initiatives centered in the Weinberg Operating Rooms. Among these is an innovative use of medical simulation to identify and eliminate hazards that could harm patients undergoing a variety of surgical procedures. Full Story >>

Todd Dorman, M.D., FCCM, Vice Chair for Critical Care Medicine, was recently elected President of the The American Society of Critical Care Anesthesiologists for the 2008-2010 term.Todd Dorman, M.D., FCCM, Vice Chair of Johns Hopkins Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine, was recently elected President of The American Society of Critical Care Anesthesiologists for the 2008-2010 term. Dr. Dormam will lead the ASCCA in its mission to educate anesthesiologists in the care of critically ill patients and to foster the knowledge and practice of critical care medicine by anesthesiologists. 4th All Africa Anaesthesia Congress
A Kenyan Anesthesiology resident talks to
medical students on a rotation through her speciality.Imagine a country in Africa with only one anesthesia physician in a population of three to five million people. Or a more developed African country with one anesthesia physician for each million residents. This lack of anesthesiologists is the reality for many of the 54 countries and over one billion people who reside in Africa. To address this and other challenges facing anesthesiologists in Africa, the Johns Hopkins Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine will co-sponsor the 4th All Africa Anaesthesia Congress (AAAC), created to address pain, anesthesia and critical care medicine issues within Africa. Resident Adam Carinci Awarded Pain Scholarship
Resident Adam J. Carinci was recently awarded an Emerging Solutions in Pain (ESP) Scholarship.Resident Adam J. Carinci was recently awarded an Emerging Solutions in Pain (ESP) Scholarship to attend the American Academy of Pain Medicine's (AAPM) 25th Annual Meeting. He was selected from a field of national and international pain residents, fellows and nurses to receive funding to attend the meeting, which focuses on emerging issues in Pain Medicine such as war-inflicted pain and pain care for the elderly. Brain Simulation Technology Research Focuses on A Nanoscale World
Johns Hopkins Associate Professor of Anesthesiology Marek Mirski, along with his colleague Associate Professor David Gracias of Biomedical Engineering, were recently awarded a fully funded grant for their Therapeutics proposal submitted to the Institute for NanoBioTechnology (INBT) at Johns Hopkins.Johns Hopkins Associate Professor of Anesthesiology Marek Mirski, along with his colleague Associate Professor David Gracias of Biomedical Engineering, were recently awarded a fully funded grant for their Therapeutics proposal submitted to the Institute for NanoBioTechnology (INBT) at Johns Hopkins. Their proposed project, "Development Of A Serotonin Nano-wire Electrode To Evaluate Synaptic Mechanisms Of Anticonvulsant Deep Brain Stimulation (dbs) In Anterior Thalamus," is one of four projects fully funded by INBT.
