Visiting Scientists, Observers and Research Trainees

Visiting Scientists

Visiting scientists with advanced degrees (Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent) are accepted for sabbatical appointments or additional postdoctoral training by special arrangement with the sponsoring member of the faculty who agrees to provide research space and resources. Visiting scientists are expected to secure their own financial support prior to the anticipated appointment. These temporary appointments are at the faculty level, and are generally at least 6 to 12 months in duration, although they may be extended up to 2 years. If the visiting scientist is a foreign national, a visa and proof of U.S. health insurance are required.

Observers

An observer is a hospital appointment that allows the applicant to observe in the clinic. Observers are not allowed any direct patient contact. Research fellows who hold M.D. degrees often request this appointment. If the observer is a foreign national, a visa and proof of U.S. health insurance are required.

Research Trainee

This is a learning appointment. Usually applicants are undergraduate or graduate students. No stipend is offered for this position. Research trainees must provide documentation from their home institution that they are a student in good standing and have that institution's permission to participate in the program. If the applicant is a foreign national, usually these appointments are granted for a 3-month period, as it can be accomplished with a tourist visa. If the appointment period is longer than 3-months, a J-1 visa is required. Proof of U.S. health insurance is required.

How to Apply

Interested applicants should contact potential faculty sponsors, or Dr. Bruce S. Bochner, Division Director. Applications for visiting physicians (observer) status should be directed to Dr. Peter Creticos, Clinical Director, pcretic@jhmi.edu.
