Undergraduate Research Experiences
Pre-doctoral Training
Although the training efforts of the Division are largely post-doctoral, pre-doctoral students can be accepted into individual research laboratories for supervised thesis research. This opportunity requires a special agreement between the candidate's home department and the desired faculty preceptor within the Division. Applicants should contact the relevant preceptor at the earliest possible time to determine interest and availability of resources. The Division ordinarily cannot provide pre-doctoral stipends. However, some members of our Faculty participate in the Johns Hopkins Molecular Medicine Program which independently selects and funds graduate students for Ph.D. training.
Medical Students and House Officers
Johns Hopkins medical students are welcome to take free quarter or summer electives within the Division involving clinical clerkships, supervised laboratory or clinical research, or some combination of the two. For research experiences, stipends are generally available from institutional funds in the Dean's office or from the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. Interested students should contact relevant faculty members as far in advance of the desired elective rotation as possible. For additional information or to discuss clinical or research possibilities, contact Drs. Bruce S. Bochner at (410) 550-2101 for research experiences or, Peter S. Creticos at (410) 550-2111, for clinical clerkships or rotations. Medical students from other United States medical schools are accepted contingent upon a cooperative agreement between the two schools involved. Foreign medical students are welcome to apply, but special credentialing requirements may be required for clinical or clinical research appointments.
House Officers from the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions are accepted for clinical rotations of at least two weeks' to one month's duration on a space-available basis. Interested applicants should contact Dr. Susan MacDonald at (410) 550-2075.
