Johns Hopkins School of Medicine Online Application

Information For International Students

Thank you for your interest in applying to The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

The following information is intended to assist prospective medical school applicants to The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine who are international students or have exclusively studied outside the United States.

The following requirements must be met by all applicants to The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine:

Accredited Institution

All applicants must be or have previously been in attendance at a fully accredited institution in the country where the academic work was completed. Prospective applicants who have exclusively studied outside the United States, in most cases, must have their academic course work supplemented by a year or more of course work in an accredited university in the United States.

Official Transcripts

The applicant must arrange for an official transcript to be sent to Hopkins from each college or university attended outside the United States. The Admissions Committee requires that all of the course work submitted in fulfillment of admission requirements must be evaluated on the basis of a traditional grading system. Such a system must employ a range of numbers or letters to indicate the comparative level of performance. Grades of "Pass" or "Credit" will be considered acceptable for only a limited number of courses. If the applicant has received a grade of Pass/Credit for any courses on the required list below, an instructor must supply, in writing, a statement evaluating the student's performance in that course. A grade below "C" will not satisfy the course requirement.

College Work

Applicants for admission must fulfill the following seven prerequisites:

Mathematics

  1. Calculus or Statistics, one year (Advanced placement credit for calculus, acceptable to the student's undergraduate college, may be used to satisfy the calculus requirement).

Chemistry

  1. General college chemistry, one year, and laboratory exercises, one year (Applicants who were exempted from introductory chemistry by advanced placement credit must take one additional semester of advanced college chemistry with lab).
  1. Organic Chemistry, one year, and laboratory exercises, one semester (A semester of biochemistry with lab may be substituted for the second semester of organic chemistry).

Biology

  1. College Biology, one year, and laboratory exercises, one year (Credit for advanced placement or pre-college exams are not acceptable as a substitute).

Physics

  1. General college physics, one year, and laboratory exercises, one year (Pre-college courses acceptable to the student's undergraduate college may be used to fulfill the Hopkins physics requirement).

Humanities, Social and Behavioral Sciences

  1. A minimum of 24 semester hours (or equivalent) in areas of humanities (English, History, Classics, Foreign Language, Philosophy, Arts), social science (Sociology, Economics, Political Science, Anthropology) and behavioral science (Psychology). The TOEFL exam for foreign applicants is not needed to apply to the School of Medicine. However, the applicant must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Degree

  1. Each applicant must have received a bachelor's (B.A. or B.S.) degree.

It is highly recommended that students have a working knowledge of computers for communications and retrieving information. Individuals who have completed their studies in biology 4 years prior to their application are strongly advised to take one semester of advanced mammalian biology.

Letters of Recommendation

Arrange to have the following sent directly to the AMCAS Letter Service at: http://www.aamc.org/students/amcas/faq/amcasletters.htm

  • A recommendation from your college Premedical Committee/Advisor. (This is required if your college has such a committee/advisor).
    Or
  • Two letters of recommendation from faculty members in science departments who have taught you and one letter of recommendation from a non-science faculty member. (This is to be used if neither of the above is provided by your college). The Committee on Admission will make final determination as to whether an applicant's recommendations have come from the appropriate source. Information supplied by the colleges is generally used to make this determination.

Note to applicants with advanced degrees or significant postgraduate work experience: In addition to the letters listed above, it is advisable for you to get recommendations from each component of your education and major work experiences.

Financial Aid

Applicants who do not hold a permanent visa or an immigrant visa are not eligible for financial aid due to federal restrictions on the use of most of the loan funds that support the financial aid program. Due to these limitations, qualified international students will be issued conditional acceptance into the School of Medicine under the following terms: On or before July 1 of the year of matriculation, the accepted student must deposit in an escrow account to be established in the State of Maryland under the terms acceptable to The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine funds sufficient to meet all tuition, mandatory fees, and living expenses for the anticipated period of enrollment. (In case of tuition increases for future year, accepted students will be billed for additional charges as they become due). The current escrow amount for four years of medical education is approximately $268,000 US currency.

Individuals who already received the degree of Doctor of Medicine are not eligible to apply as candidates for a medical degree at Johns Hopkins. Should further instruction be desired, individuals may apply as postdoctoral students. For more information, please visit The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Graduate Programs web site.
