M.D./Ph.D. application forms will be included with the Johns Hopkins Secondary Application, which is sent to applicants upon receipt of AMCAS applications. Applicants with unusual interest and motivation toward a career in medical science may wish to become concurrently enrolled in one of the Ph.D. Programs. Those applicants receiving offers of admission to a combined program will be considered for support from the federally funded Medical Scientist Training Program. A special mechanism has been set up for handling applications to the combined M.D./Ph.D. Programs. Applicants to the combined course of study should be aware that they will undergo far closer scrutiny for evidence of qualifications, scientific accomplishments, and motivation for science than applicants to the regular M.D. program. Candidates who are unable to substantiate clearly defined interest, performance and motivation toward a scientific medical career are advised to apply for the regular M.D. program. Those admitted through the regular M.D. channel may apply for entry into a graduate program at any time during their medical studies and also remain eligible for awards under the Medical Scientist Training Program. Applicants must follow the instructions as stated in the Johns Hopkins secondary application forms. Letters of recommendation should be supplemented with at least one letter from a senior faculty adviser who is closely familiar with the applicant's ability, aptitude, performance and potential for a combined career of independent biomedical research and medicine. Applicants should realize that a series of interviews will evaluate the applicant's knowledge and involvement in research. Scores from the MCAT must be sent. Scores from the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) should be sent, as well, if this test has been taken. Evaluation Applications are reviewed by the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine M.D./Ph.D. Committee on Admission. Applications are reviewed only when they are complete with all credentials. An acknowledgement letter will be sent when your application becomes complete. Interview Applicants will be notified if a personal interview is indicated. No acceptance will be offered without an interview in Baltimore. For M.D./Ph.D. applicants, activities include a series of interviews with members of the M.D./Ph.D. Committee and with other faculty members who have special interests and ability to review critically the applicant's previous research experience. Applicants also will have an opportunity to meet students enrolled in the M.D./Ph.D. program. An applicant invited to interview for the combined M.D./Ph.D. program is no longer under consideration for acceptance to regular M.D. study. However, in exceptional circumstances, an M.D./Ph.D. applicant may be selected to interview for the regular M.D. program only. Acceptance Notifications of acceptance will begin in November and continue until mid-March. Visit the M.D./Ph.D. Programs Web site for more information. |
