Committee on Outside Interests

Committee on Outside Interests

The Committee reviews arrangements that have the potential to affect the research, education, and other primary activities of the School of Medicine, its faculty, and its students. The Committee makes management recommendations to the Dean of the School of Medicine (or his designee, the Vice Dean of Research).

The objective of the review is to protect the School of Medicine and its faculty, staff and students from situations involving risks such as the following:

  • compromise of scientific objectivity and/or human subject safety in the conduct of research due to financial gain
  • use of university resources for private financial gain
  • adverse impact by those in leadership roles on the professional or academic advancement of colleagues, staff or students as a result of outside interests

The Committee also makes recommendations to the Dean regarding revisions or modifications of the School’s Policy on Conflict of Interest. Policy revisions are subject to review and approval by the Advisory Board of the Medical Faculty.

Committee FAQs

What should I do if I am interested in serving on the Committee on Conflict of Interest?

Faculty interested in serving on the Committee should contact Jill Kearney at the Office of Policy Coordination. When space becomes available, the names of interested faculty are forwarded to the Vice Dean of Research who annually appoints new Committee members.

Can I attend the meeting and present my case to the Committee?

You can only attend the meeting if you have been invited by the Committee. This usually happens when cases are complex and/or the Committee requests more details or information about the case.

Can I appeal a decision?

Outcomes and decisions that are recommended by the Committee and adopted by the Vice Dean can be appealed by rejecting the electronic management plan sent to faculty via eOPC within 30 days. When rejecting your management plan, you should include a statement as to why you are appealing the decision in the textbox provided on the appeals page. Appeals are usually re-reviewed by the Committee. You may be asked to submit more material and/or present your case in front of the Committee.
