Physical Therapy

Physical therapy services are provided consistent with the mission of The Johns Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department:

To provide world-class comprehensive rehabilitation care services to improve function, independence, and the quality of life of each person served.

A variety of physical therapy services of the highest quality are provided to both inpatients and outpatients. Our services cover the life span and range from early habilitation in the neonatal intensive care unit to advising frail elderly clients on how to increase strength, bone mass and cardiac capacity.

Physical therapists address the physical, cognitive and environmental aspects of disability. They train patients in the skills needed to recover lost function and thereby increase independence.

Physical therapists manage movement dysfunction and enhance physical and functional abilities; restore, maintain and promote not only optimal physical function but optimal wellness and fitness and optimal quality of life as it relates to movement and health. Physical therapy interventions may prevent the onset, symptoms and progression of impairments, functional limitations and disabilities that may result from diseases, disorders, conditions or injuries.

As integral members of the acute health care delivery team, our physical therapists work with the physician and other team members to improve the patient's function, train family members, facilitate hospital discharge planning, and arrange follow-up care. In the outpatient clinic, physical therapists manage patients with a wide variety of conditions with the ultimate goals of improved physical function; preventing the progression of impairments, functional limitations and disability; and optimal wellness, fitness and quality of life.

The academic environment of Johns Hopkins contributes to the overall atmosphere of excellence fostered by our therapists. Our physical therapists are committed to education and training of patients, families and colleagues. Physical therapists are involved in training student physical therapists and physical therapist assistants from 30 colleges and universities nationwide. Our physical therapists teach at local universities, present courses on the national level, present lectures and poster presentations at national meetings, and publish in the physical therapy literature. Within the department, in-service trainings are presented regularly, continuing education courses are offered, and staff receive continuing education benefits. Staff members are involved in evidence-based practice and performance improvement initiatives, and they are encouraged to participate in clinical research.

Patients from any service of The Johns Hopkins Hospital are eligible for treatment. Outpatients are seen at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Johns Hopkins Outpatient Center, and our Green Spring Station facility in suburban Lutherville.

We have a variety of  career opportunities.
