The Johns Hopkins Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation offers a full spectrum of services for individuals with a wide range of disabilities and musculoskeletal problems. Each patient is evaluated by a physiatrist, who then works with the referring physician and the rehabilitation team to design and implement an individualized plan of care. This level of individual attention is necessary to ensure the best possible treatment for patients with a broad range of disabilities.

The physiatric evaluation is a comprehensive inventory of the whole person in the contexts of physical illness, family/home life and society. It includes:

• Functional assessment
• Exercise prescription
• Evaluation for adaptive equipment
• Contracture prevention
• Skin management
• Bowel/bladder management
• Workplace and home modification
• Recommendations for family education and training
• Prognosis of ultimate outcome

Patients are referred for appropriate therapy services and, if necessary, may be admitted to one of our comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation facilities for further treatment.
