I am delighted to announce the appointment of Rebecca German, Ph.D., as the first Vice-Chair for Research in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dr. German is the preeminent authority on the development of swallowing in infant mammals.

A graduate of the University of Chicago, Dr. German received her Ph.D. in Biology from Harvard University, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Illinois. Dr. German comes to us from the University of Cincinnati where she was Professor of Biology and Pediatrics. Author of more than 50 peer-refereed publications in leading journals, including Science, her research has been supported by the National Institutes of Health for more than 20 years. At Hopkins, Dr. German will hold professorships in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and in Functional Anatomy and Evolution.
