Dr. Palmer came to Hopkins in 1983 after completing a residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Washington.
Dr. Palmer earned his M.D. with Honors from the New York University School of Medicine in 1980. He received a B.A. magna cum laude in music from the NYU College of Arts and Sciences and studied as a piano major at The Juilliard School.
His research focuses on neural control of mastication and swallowing and has been supported by the National Institutes of Health, beginning with a Clinical Investigator Development Award from 1987 to 1992, and continuing with a series of research project grants.
Dr. Palmer is a on the editorial boards of the journal Dysphagia (founding member) and the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and is on the board of directors of the Association of Academic Physiatrists. Dr. Palmer directs the department’s Swallowing Disorders Program, and was formerly the medical director of the Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Program. He is an honorary member of the Japanese Society for Dysphagia Rehabilitation and a Fellow of the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine.
